Born at Thirsk ( Yorkshire ) in England, he studied in Rheims ( France ), because it was too dangerous at this time to be trained as a future Catholic priest. He was ordained in 1587.
He then returned in England to minister persecuted parishioners. He was arrested near Gloucester in 1593 for the crime of priesthood...
He spent a year in Gatehouse prison, in Westminster. He escaped on february 1594, but was soon recaptured. He was convicted for treason and condemned to death. He spent five years in Queen's Bench prison. He was an apostle for his companion of misery.
He was eventually hanged on 18 february 1601.
Pope Piux XI canonized him in 1929 with other English martyrs.
